Friends of the Coombe

Friends of the Coombe is a registered charity that was established in 1982 to assist the development of the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital and support its vital research programmes.

Since it was founded in 1826, the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital has distinguished itself as a world-class medical centre of excellence, providing care for babies and women of all ages.

The hospital is one of the largest and most comprehensive providers of women and infant healthcare in Europe and, as a national referral hospital, takes care of patients with the most complex of obstetric, paediatric and gynaecological conditions from right across the country and, in some instances, from across the island of Ireland.

About the Project

Caring for numerous complex pregnancies, the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital encounters loss every week that inevitably results in profound shock and sadness for families.

Bereaved parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles and wider family members cram a lifetime of memories into a short few hours and days and it is essential that they are able to do so in an environment that matches the warm and compassionate care provided by the doctors, midwives and nurses at The Coombe.

Utilising the hospice ethos, we will renovate three en-suite rooms to create a family-friendly home away from home that will afford bereaved parents both comfort and dignity. Each room will be designed in a way that enables essential medical equipment to be discreetly concealed, resulting in a much softer, more homely feel. Adjustable lighting, beautiful soft furnishings, additional family seating and specially commissioned artwork will also feature in this bespoke design. There will also be a permanent tribute to the Galway Cycle and families who have tirelessly fundraised to make this important project a reality.

The Coombe Women & Infants Hospital was the first maternity hospital in Ireland to adopt the ‘Hospice Friendly Hospitals’ programme. We hope that this project will not only benefit bereaved families at The Coombe, but will also showcase nationally the highest possible standard of bereavement care.
